Here are this weekend's games previewed by yours truly. Eagles V Wildcats: Eagles are in cruise control at the moment. Undefeated after 9 rounds of football these guys have not looked close to losing - although the Roos certainly gave them a little to think about last Friday night. The Wildcats however seem to be in freefall having lost their last three games. Although their last two have only been decided by an average margin of 13.5 points against quality opposition in the Gargoyles and Dingos - so they're still putting up a good show even in their losses. Injuries for the Catters last week certainly did not help their cause - and they still came to within 3 goals. So you would think that their defense is solid. If the Eagles come into this game complacent after their stellar run so far - I would not put it past the Wildcats to give them a scare. This will be closer than people expect. Beetle's Call: Eagles by 3 goals. Hawks V Demons: Well the Hawks didn't have to wait to long to have a shot at avenging their shock loss to the 2010 Demons did they? What can the Dees pull out of the hat this time will be very interesting. The Hawks will surely have learnt enough from their last encounter to make the appropriate moves. Perhaps they might actually turn up expecting to play serious footy this time. I don't see the Hawks not squaring the ledger up here and squaring it up well. Beetle's Call: Hawks by 6 goals. Dingos V Swans: This weekend will see the Swans playing their first away game in 7 weeks having played their last 6 in the comfort of their homeground. And Toronto certainly laid out the welcoming mat for them with the ever-dangerous Dingos waiting for them. If the Swans have been unable to win at home - you'd have to say it'd be near impossible for them to grab the four points at Humber North against the Dingos. Surprisingly the Dingos have actually lost 4 out of their last 5 games with last weekend being their win over the Wildcats - yet they're still very much in a race for the top 6 showing just how close this season has been. Looks like they'll be starting a little winning streak here though with the 4 premiership points theirs to lose. Beetle's Call: Dingos by 10 goals. Rebels V Roos: The Rebs will obviously need to win this game as they will with all their remaining games this season if they want to still be playing September. A win here for the Roos might see them do enough to stay in the 6 just. It'll be tight. Roos gave the runaway Eagles a red hot go last Friday - even ruffling up the feathers of their big Aussie forward Mark Peterson. The Rebels were very solid against the Blues and easily covered the Dees, so they're not a side to be taken lightly. This game could be a lot closer than we think. For a couple of reasons. - Firstly this will be the Roos first away game since round 2. That's right 7 straight home games at Humber South. The Roos have lost their last 2 games at Humber North (2009 GF, and Round 1 vs Eagels). As well as losing their last away game in Guelph to the Gargoyles in Round 2. Soooooo on that line of thinking their "away" record is questionable.... what a stupid line of thought!!! - Secondly the Rebels got to within 21 points to the 2009 undefeated minor premiers in round 4 at Humber Sth. Just saying. Beetle's Call: After having presented all that ridiculously inconsequential information I'll tip the Roos to win by 5 goals. Blues V Gargoyles: Now this is most certainly the game which will have a few interested followers. The Blues have not lost since round 3 so are heading into this game with a 6 game winning streak - while the Gargoyles who have not lost since round 4 (against the Blues), head in with a 5 game winning streak. If the Blues win - they put another game between them and the Gargoyles to have a stronger hold on 2nd spot. Win for the Guelph battalion and they're on equal footy premiership points-wise. What a beauty! The Blues have a very tough run home after this - with sides including the Wildcats, Eagles and Dingos in their last 4 games. While the Gargoyles have just as tough a run with opponents including Roos, Eagles and Hawks. Beetle's Call: May as well just flip a coin here. The Blues have been without their top tier midfielders in the last couple of games which is the main concern for me in this game. But this is the Blues website - so I'll back the Blues to win by 3 goals. OK - where's my cheque? PS: For what the OAFL's Phantom and Jean Grey had to say about this weekend's footy, click HERE . |
