Throughout his 5 year career (Cain joined the club in its first season in the OAFL) with the Blues Cain has always played a part in every facet of the club. Starting off as simply an Aussie player looking to have a kick while he and his wife Mel settled in Toronto, he unwittingly went on to become one of the clubs most successful and respected coaches as well as playing an integral role off the field in helping the club set up its executive operations. Cain is arguably one of the most influential players to have pulled on the blues jumper since its inception into the league. He was appointed as coach in his second season with the club with then coach Bruce Parker handing over the reigns midway though the 2007 season. The club went on to win 2 games that season (both by 1 point margins). Obviously the club enjoyed those wins given they had lost every game in its inaugural year. Even at this early stage the club at this stage knew it was on its way up. They had built a strong base of foundation players - and the exec knew that with the right guidance the club would start winning games on a more consistent basis. In his first full season as coach Cain led the Blues to their best ever season to finish 8-5 at the end of the 2008 season. This was capped off with their first ever finals campaign which saw the club stun favourites Guelph Gargoyles with a massive victory, before narrowly losing to the Broadview Hawks. The success of the club's 2008 run was largely due to the work Cain put into his players during the club pre-season. The infamous Cain "beep test" held at the club's pre-season gym helped set up the fittest squad the Blues had ever seen. With the arrival of his first child in the September of 2008 Cain decided the time was right Off the field, Cain was an integral part of the Blues then developing executive, playing an integral role as club treasurer as well as assisting in the clubs acquisition of Fosters as their major sponsor. Fosters remains the clubs biggest financial sponsor entering its 3rd season as major sponsor. His experience with football clubs in Australia allowed him to assist the club set up what arguably one of the best run executives in the league. He continues to be a tremendous source of advice from the current club exec. The club would like to thank Jase for his tremendous efforts and dedication to the Central Blues - who without a doubt has played a vital part in the success enjoyed by the club today. For further insight into Jase Cain he was featured in the 6th instalment of Blues Brothers. Click HERE to read the interview. And HERE's one from deep in our archives (The transcript of Jason Cain's press conference when he announced he was stepping down as Senior Coach at the end of the 2008 season.) but it's an absolute riveting read. |
