Div 2s Lose Thanks to Blues?!?!

ImageThe Central Blues Div 2 side suffered their first loss for the season in their 4th game for the season against the Rebeldogs in controversial circumstances. Prior to the start of the game, it became apparent that the Rebeldogs were short players and requested a couple of players to top up their list for the game. With their players already suited up - the Co-Coaches for the Blues 2s, Daniel "D2" Lock and Kien "Keno" La decided that given the dedication and preparation shown by their players, none of them should have to play in an opposiing teams jumper - so decided that they would step in for the sake of the game to go ahead. This would turn out to be a decision which would come back to haunt the club, as the two Senior players went on to make significant contributions to the Rebeldogs eventual victory.

This game saw the Blues welcome both familiar and new faces with the return of Blues cult-hero Rob "Bulldog" Barker making his return, while Renae Tong and Joey Labouthier made their debut in the Div 2s. Bulldog went on to win the Top Contributor award for his efforts - while Derek "George" MacDonald, backing up after a stint in the previous game for the Div 1s was Best on Ground kicking a beauty of a goal and leading from the front. Perhaps George should have his parents in town more often as the little fella seemed to turn it on for his folks. Molly Gamble who revels in the Blues 2s running game also played a great game snaring a great goal off the ground in the 3rd quarter which had the crowd cheering.

Joey Labouthier - yet another of the Blues Neil McNeill High School students made his much anticipated debut - and was sensational taking on opponents twice his size with absolutely no fear. His youthful energy saw him at most contests as he roamed the vast expanse of Humber North. With a couple more games in the 2s - Joey won't be far off making his Div 1 debut alongside Keane, Cinco and Callendar. Image

The game was close throughout - however D2 lining up in the Rebeldogs forward set up kicked 2 goals. While on the other end Keno cut off what should have been a goal to Bulldog right on the line. The final score saw the Rebeldogs win 53-40 - which given the contributions of D2 and Keno makes the loss sting that much more. However all credit must go to the Rebeldogs - as a win is a win, and no matter how much D2 and Keno will protest - the club stands by the result. It will be interesting however to see what happens in future Div 2 games if opposition sides are short players. Of course the Blues will always be willing to assist in making up the numbers for opposition sides. But there are many considerations which also must be reviewed. Firstly the Blues players are proud to wear their navy blue jumpers - as they train all week with their sole intention to run out on Saturday proudly representing the mighty Blues jumper, so to ask any player to pull on another teams jumper is asking a huge sacrifice of that particular player. And secondly what if this was a semi final or even Grand Final? Sure it would be unlikely that a side making it into the Div 2 Grand Final will be short players - but say two sides are playing for a Grand Final spot - and one of those sides are short players? Surely the league should be looking into preventing such an awkward position - for both sides involved.

On a lighter note, rumours are abounding that the club has launched an internal investigation as to whether these two players will be facing sanctions or some sort of penalty in showing so much sportsmanship in helping an opposition side win against the Navy Blue. Feel free to email the club on This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it to voice your disappointment that such senior and respected players can be a part of such a scandal. We would dare say that should these players be brave enough to attend the end of season footy trip that the coach Jaye Macumber will have plans in store to see that these players are punished appropriately.

ImageNext up are the Quebec Saints in Ottawa - as these two sides face off for the second time in 3 weeks for the Parker-Anderson Cup. The first saw the Blues taste the sweetest of victories - so the Sainters will be keen to regain the coveted trophy and bragging rights. This match up has always been a heated rivalry with the Saints set up by former Blues player Luke Anderson. The Saints were the 2009 Div 2 premiers and will be desperate to regain top billing in the league - after the Blues opened the 2010 season on fire winning their first 3 games.
