Just when we thought round 1 of the OAFL season was a blinder - they go and throw rnd 2 in our face. The footy on offer around the league was simply unbelievable with some results that put showed just how close this league is looking this year. Although we say "some" results... some other results reminded us how good some certain teams are, namely the 2009 Premiers the Toronto Eagles. Division 2 Results:
The Blues Div 2s continue on their merry way in 2010 with another successful showing. This time against the Etobicoke Kangaroos who like the Broadview Hawks struggled to make up the numbers. However there were enough in the end to get the game going and after a close first quarter the Blues 2s blew the floodgates opened to take the 4 points with a 58 point win. The Blues were simply too fresh compared to the bedraggled Roos who by the end of the game did not have an interchange due to being shorthanded to begin but also an injury to one of their players. To the Roos credit, they never gave up and fought to the very end. Unsure what happened in the other scheduled Div2 game between the new Rebel Dogs v Broadview Hawks. Division 1 Results: Blues (14.7-91) defeat Wildcats (4.3-27): The Blues broke their 2-game losing streak to these pesky Wildcats in an entertaining affair. The game was won in the midfield as the Blues runners just won too many contests starving their opposition forwards of any decent opportunities. Whiel upfront for the Blues we saw Dobson in his farewell game enjoy the old "Pagan's Paddock" treatment having the entire 50 zone to himself as he helped himself to 3 goals and assisting for 3 others. The skillful DTrain Zimmerman enjoyed his 50th milestone as well shutting down the opposition forward Crouchy before being put up forward to slot in a beauty of a goal himself. Dingos (10.6-66) defeat Demons (6.2-38): The Dingos continue to enjoy their outings against the Demons - although the Demons have most definitely improved their competiveness in 2010. Experience in the end seems to have gotten the Dingos across the line, but we expect the Demons to continue to surprise opposition sides this season.
Gargoyles (7.6-48) defeat Roos (4.12-36): The Roos first loss to the Eagles in Rnd 1 was not a really surprising - however this loss against the Gargoyles has media analysts bamboozled. How has a Roos outfit who went 0-14 in 2009 open their 2010 campaign at 0-2? We're still trying to find out when the Roos last lost 2 games in a row (3 if you count the 2009 Grand Final loss to the Eagles). However we at BluesNews have not written them off just yet - as the scoreline suggest these Roos weren't far off. And we also know that the Goyles at home are no easybeats. So we will wait and see how the Roos continue on in 2010. As for the winners, the Gargoyles were certainly disappointed with 2009 and have obviously come back in 2010 to prove that last year was an abberation and that they are a much better side than what they showed in 09. Will be a force to be reckoned with this season. Rebels (3.1-19) lose to Hawks (18.17-125): Just when the media vuktures began circling the supposed carcass of the Hawks they come back to remind the league that they are still one of the premier sides of the competition by easily accounting for the Rebels. The Rebels seem to be just on the cusp of finding their winning formula - however just a few ingredients off and you're in trouble in this league such is how close this competition really is. We have this weekend off for Victoria day, so Round 3 will be on May 29. Could not come soon enough.
