The Blues women travelled to New York City this past weekend and while the Men's teams were enjoying success on the pitch, the women faced a lot of adversity. After a long drive through the night on Thursday the girls grabbed a quick nap and then were off to explore the big apple. A day of site seeing, shopping and enjoying the sunny warm weather started a weekend off right. A team dinner in one of the fine dining establishments on Restaurant Row and then back to yonkers for an early night. Saturday saw idea conditions for footy and one the coach found the feild after getting lost twice they got to see what they were up against.
The first game of the day saw the hosts NY play a composite site of players from eastern USA. All girls trying to make the USA national team. The New York Magpies showed us that we were in for a long day on the field. The Blues were fortunate enough to play the Magpies in the second game. New York came out firing in that second game of the day looking to make amends for the drubbing they took at the hands of the US national team. A couple of quick goals had the Blues on their heels and wondering what they had got themselves into.
Steady work off the back line By Katherine Morton, Molly Gamble and Rochelle Allan qucikly got the ball going in the right direction and the Blues were now attacking. Strong defensive pressure by the Magpies limited the opportunities of our forwards. Allison Sally, Renne worked hard to move the ball out of the middle to the wings and half forward targets. Brilliant attack from the half back help produce the two goals of the quarter as both Molly and Rochelle kicked for goal in the first half. The second half saw the defensive pressure get better holding NY to two less goals in the half. Betty, Christene and Kristyn continued to crumb the football as it was delivered to Erika at full forward, the result was more shots at goal. Midway throught the half Kristyn's hard work was rewarded as she kicked her first of the year. inaccurate kicking resulted in a 1 goal 3 behind half leaving the Blues with a loss. The girls battle hard the whole game and showed incredible stregth of character in the face of tough opposition. Allison Godard started in the ruck against a larger opponent and battled well using better body position to win her fair share of the clearances. Good running support by Sally, Renee and Betty saw the ball moved well out of the centre only to be quickly rebounded by a very strong Red team defence. Katherine Morton had a tough afternoon watching kicks continuely be bombed in from Half forward. Catherine got a good work out having to kick out from goal 18 times in the second game. During the second half the Blues started to gel on the kick outs with Katherine finding great leads from Molly, Betty and Sally. Despite the loss, (which was only 4 goals more than what the magpies were beat by)there were a lot of positives to be taken away from the weekend.
