Season 2010 - Round 2 Preview

Image Round 1 of the OAFL 2010 season was a superb display of football. Under trying conditions all clubs put in a relatively good showing at such an early stage of the season, and as most clubs will continue to build during the season in both skills and fitness the footy can only get better! Round 2 shapes up to be an absolute beauty.

Division 2 Games:

Blues Reserves V Roos Reserves: The Blues Div 2s opened their account with a W against the Hawks - who actually needed a spare from the Blues to help make up the numbers last week. While the Roos were on the wrong end of a Quebec Saints flogging. It will be interesting to see how the Roos respond this week. The Blues 2s coaches Kein La and Daniel Lock will need to ensure there is no complacency amongst their players  - because let's not forget they're dealing with the Etobicoke Roos. The Roos have dominated the Div 1 league in the past few seasons and a lot of that success stemmed from their depth in their playing stocks. Quebec Saints were head and shoulders over the rest in 2009 - and it may be that they continue to enjoy that gap in 2010. But as for the rest of the Div 2 pack in 2009 these sides were all very even and we expect this game to be no different.

Prediction: Blues by less than 2 goals.

Rebel Dogs V Hawks Reserves: The debut of the OAFL's newest Div 2 side, a composition team made up of Toronto Rebels and Toronto Dingos - the Rebel Dogs have probably one of the coolest names going around. Hopefully their game will be just as marketable - knowing the toughness with which both senior sides play with this Div 2 side looms to be one of the underdogs (no pun intended) of the comp. The Hawks meanwhile struggled last week against the Blues - but we expect they will come out this week looking for redemption. The Hawks are a proud lot and would not want to be the first club to lose to the Rebel Dogs.

Prediction: Tipping an upset here with the Rebel Dogs to finish up yapping a win on debut by 3 goals.

Division 1 Games:

Central Blues V Hamilton Wildcats: The Cats took the honours against the Blues last year winning both encounters and will be looking to continue that trend in 2010 and after a big win against the Toronto Dingos last week will be full of confidence heading into this game. Likewise the Blues were also looking sharp in their first up run last week against the Hawks. Going on both performances both sides look very evenly matched and this game shapes up to be a classic showdown. The game will be won in defense - with the team with the more disciplined backline to come out on top. The Blues with the experienced heads of Jason Cain, Bruce Parker, Daniel Zimmerman lead by Jacob Sone would arguably be as good as it gets in the OAFL.

Prediction: Blues to win by 6 goals.

Toronto Dingos V High Park Demons: The Dingos will be extremely disappointed with their loss at the hands of the Wildcats last week and this may be very unfortunate for the Demons. The Dingos scored some massive wins last year against the Demons and will be looking for a nice little percentage booster in this game. Can the Demons surprise us? Probably unlikely.

Prediction: Dingos by 8 goals.

Guelph Gargoyles V Etobicoke Kangaroos: Could we be witnessing the slow demise of the Etobicoke Roos? Was their loss last week just a minor hiccup? They were afterall facing the 2009 Premiers on their home turf and the last time these two sides met was in last year's Grand Final with the result much the same. But the host of missing Aussies from the 2010 model of the Roos would surely have been difficult to replace. The Gargoyles threatened all last season with their potential - but were seemingly unable to execute their game at the standard that they knew they were capable of. The Gargoyles are rumoured to have recruited extremely well in the off season topping up an already solid list. Last week's big win over the big-time 2009 improvers Ottawa Swans, 2010 just might be their year.

Prediction: In an upset result, we're getting on the Goyle train in this game, as the Goyles have always been tough at home. Guelph by 2 goals.

Toronto Rebels V Broadview Hawks: The Rebels walked away in Rnd 1 grinners and will be dead keen on making it two in a row. However they've been scheduled against one of the worst teams in the worst situation to achieve that. The Broadview Hawks will be angry as a disturbed hill bullants after their loss to the Blues last week and the Rebels might just cop a touch up here. Shuttleworth was a non-factor last week after being easily covered by Blues skipper Jacob Sone for the majority of the game. He would be desperate to remind the league that he was an OAFL MVP back in the day - but teams hwill soon work out that now that Danny Walker is gone, that if they shut him down the Hawks struggle. However we're unsure if the Rebels have the personnel to get the job done.

Prediction: Hawks will be too good. 3 goals.

Ottawa Swans V Toronto Eagles: The Swans play their first home game for the season and will be looking to give their fans a winning show. However they'll need to play out of their skin if they want to get the 4 points against the 09 Premiers Toronto Eagles. However the travel factor has always played into the hands of the Swans - so depending on who the Eagles miss due to unavailability due to the travel requirement this game could be a lot closer than expected. The Swans were the huge improvers last year - enjoying 4 wins last year after not having won a game in it's first year in the league.

Prediction: The Eagles experienced heads will get them past the Swannies by 7 goals.
