ImageWelcome back to another enthralling episode of BB. This week BB hits the road as we visit our guest in his home gym while he does a quiet 20 odd reps of thrusting a 70lbs kettlebell over his head.. Our guest this week has been with the club since 2007 and for a young guy is actually one of the club veterans really. Australians refer to him as "being build like a brick s%#thouse" (solid build), he has the #1 proudly tattooed on his arm, and as BB discovers is one of the club's funnier blokes. He is of course Boris Terzic!

BB: Hey Boris, thanks for allowing us to interview you us for this installment of Blues Brothers. Don't let us interrupt your work out mate, you carry on and we'll just throw questions at ya. Now, can you let us know how you found out about Aussie Rules footy and how you got involved with the Central Blues Football Club?

Boris: From the fountain of all knowledge and the drain of valuable office time, wikipedia. I was looking for something interesting and challenging to do over the summer and was hoping to get back into team sports. I was first thinking rugby but stumbled upon the OAFL wiki page and found the Blues who were the newest team in the league at the time.

BB: Let's get this straight, I don't want you to say another bad thing about the internet ever again Boris. I'll pretend you didn't refer to it as a drain of valuable office time for the sake of this interview...hahaha - So when did you start playing with the Central Blues?

Boris: My first year was 2007, and what a year it was! We got our first win, in Guelph by one point! That was great, and then later yet another win buy one point against Hamilton. They weren’t pretty, but they were wins! And of course there was the trip to Ottawa for the Canada day long weekend, a truly memorable team building year.

BB: Awesome - not too many guys can say they were a part of the clubs first two victories. A serious achievement!!! Unfortunately for the club, 2009 saw you miss the majority of the season due to your busy schedule with school and work. What are you currently studying? And how is your schedule looking for the 2010 season?

ImageBoris: I am currently finishing up my Bachelors of Social Work at York University. As for 2010, it’s going to be a busy year with my final year of school. I do hope to be able to make it out more often then in 2009 though.

BB: Defintely hoping you can free up some time for us, will be good to see the #1 jumper running amongst the guys. Now our research department has advised us that you are a huge proponent of the sport of Kettlebell sport. What is the heck is this sport all about? (Here let me take those 400kg dumbells off you now that you've finished warming up.)

Boris: Thanks BB. Kettlebell sport is a strength sport that originated in Russia. It’s all about maximum repetitions over 10 minutes without putting the kettlebells down. A truly great lifter will get over 80-90reps in the Clean and Jerk with a pair of 70lb kettlebells. I am nowhere near that but maybe someday.

BB: Pffft I'll show you a truly great lifter after this interview is done... The Russains ain't seen anything until they've seen BB throwing the old KBs around. Anyways I digress, let's get back to the important stuff about footy. You were a part of the squad who traveled to Las Vegas last year for the legendary 08 Footy Trip. What was your highlight of the weekend?

Boris: Ahh there are so many, I’ll have to choose only a few, or more correctly a few that I can remember.

The whole experience is a bit fuzzy now. Well there was playing cameraman for the Chief as he got to hit on some random UNLV students. Then there was the pleasure of witnessing the Staples ‘Experience’ as he sang in his underwear on the balcony and did his best impressions of Will Ferrell’s impression of Robert Goulet. And of course the Halloween at Prive nightclub at Planet Hollywood, but in general the whole weekend was a blast.

BB: Haha - the Staples experience! Love it. I still can't believe he threw that full beer can over the pool and into the hotel next door. Who did you have to bunk up with in Vegas?

Boris: There was the Chief, the Staples and the third guy I can’t quite remember who it is, but it might have been D-Train. The first two were an experience to themselves, truly a pair who like a good time and yelling at random people in the hotel across from us.

BB: Yeah Chief and Staples cannot be trusted together. They're a bad influence on each other. Now, you kindly helped out with the Demons this season to top up their numbers in one of their games. What was it like wearing another team’s uniform? And what position(s) did you play?

ImageBoris: It was weird, I kept wanting to yell: “Come on you Blues!” but always have to spot myself mid sentence and change it Demons. Overall it was a blast; they were a great group of guys and played hard. I helped them out by playing on the flanks, changing between half-back and half-forward.

BB: We hate seeing Blues players in other team's uniforms, don't you ever do it again... No seriously, great that you could help out - and you did the Blues proud. So you’re pretty famous around the club for your #1 tattoo (well Campa is probably the only person who is obsessed about your tattoo - but he's an oddball). Do you have any other tattoos? Or plans for more tattoos? If so what?

Boris: No that’s the only one. Although I did get a great inspiration for a tattoo from a movie I was a while ago, one of the characters had it on their butt cheek. It read: “Jesus is coming, look busy!” I think if I get another tattoo that will top my list of things to get.

BB:  Seriously?!?!? You're a bit of an odball yourself eh Boris.. What has been your highlight(s) since becoming a part of the Central Blues Football Club?

Boris: Being a part of the Blues first ever win is number one in my books!

BB: Yeah I think it would be for most too you lucky bastard. So our research department also tells us that you’ve become a bit of a marathon running addict. How many marathons/half marathons have you run? And why the hell do you enjoy running for so long?

Boris: I’ve come to the conclusion a while ago that if I couldn’t run fast, I might as well just run far. Running is a great way to relieve stress and keep your fitness up so it’s stuck with me and no matter what sport you play you’ve gotta run! Especially in footy, that field is huge and it takes some legs to get around. I’ve run two marathons and five half-marathon to date and plan on getting in a couple of more in the future.

BB: Good one Forrest. What is your best time in a marathon etcetera?

Boris: My best marathon is around 3hours 55min. Still a very long time, see told ya I ain’t fast. But when it comes to personal bests, I got my personal best in the 10k at the 2009 Sporting Life 10k chasing Keno down Yonge Street. I kept up with him for about 9.5k of the race until I lost him just before the finish and ended up some 30-35sec behind him. Now that was challenge, Keno is a fast runner and a great pace bunny.

ImageBB: Not too many guys can keep up with that freakish asian - so you did pretty well to even have seen him, from what I recall he was still hungover from a big night the night before too. Now for the serious portion of the interview. For this week’s One-Words-Worth: With your personal training background, for the following players below – can you select what muscle group these players would be if they were just a muscle group?

Boris: Haha, this is going to be interesting. I’ll have to explain my choices so bear with me here.

  • Jacob Sone – Spinal Erectors - Capt. is the backbone of the blues, plus he’s damn tall!
  • Rob Chapman – Forearm Flexors - The flexors move the hands and fingers and that is exactly what Chaps does. He is the hands of the team, always making things happen.
  • Mark Dobson – Sternocleicomastoid - Try pronouncing that! Mentioned it to someone and watch them struggle to understand what you’re saying, just as if they were listening to Knackers. Knacker like the Sternocleicomastoid (a neck muscle), keeps the Blues heads up and pointed in the right direction.
  • Bruce Parker – Heart - Bruce is a true trooper, helped put the Blues together and keeps working tirelessly for the team.
  • Carl Hastrich – Quadriceps - He’s got great legs. No, not in that sense! Great footy legs, speedy and a good kick.

BB: I'm pretty sure you made up that muscle group for Knackers...But the analogy certainly fits the bill. Most Australians can't understand him. Speaking of strange Australians, Chris “Campa” Vella was named the Div 2 Captain this year. This makes him fair game as a target for the press. What do you think his strengths and weaknesses are?

Boris: Campa has Strengths? Why am I always the last one to find out? Campa is a true to heart team player and is a great choice for Captain. He is tireless in his support for the team and there isn’t anything he wouldn’t do to get the Blues a win. His greatest strength is his loyalty and willingness to do anything for the team, no matter if he is playing or not he is always on the sideline giving a hand.

BB: No weaknesses??? You're such a suck Boris! We'll name one of his weaknesses. How about the massive caterpillar on his forehead (his eyebrow or should we say mono-brow). How do you rate Campa’s eyebrow compared to the other big'uns owned by Jason Cain? Whose eyebrows reign supreme? And why?

Boris: Hmm, I was warned there would difficult questions asked of me, I was hoping it wouldn’t be this one. How could someone choose? Jase’s eyebrows are all about determination, manly determination, just look at them! As for Campa, his brows are wilder with a side of incoherent nuttiness. Every time I look at him I don’t know what’s going to happen, it’s scary at times. They seem all over the place, like that of a Wildman not yet tamed to society. For the sake of my safety I will go with Campa.

BB: Haha!!! They're both such hairy hairy fellas. I went bear watching with Campa one weekend and I think he scared the bear when his eyebrow shifted!!! Now, fnially will you be getting the H1N1 flu shot?

Boris: I am not quite sure yet. I never get the regular flu shot and this rushed delivery of the shots make we worried if they’d been fully tested.

BB: Plus we're pretty sure your arms are too hard for syringes to penetrate. Thanks for your time mate. Been awesome chatting with ya and spotting you while you work on those guns of yours. Now let's show these Russians how to kettlebell like a hero. Be sure to tune in soon for the next instalment of BB folks - we've got some serious big name guests coming up!
