.jpg) KP gets a kick off The Hamilton Wildcats have defeated the Central Blues for the second time in 2009 after a stirring final quarter saw the Wildcats come from behind and hold on to a victory in wet conditions. After a sluggish start from the Blues - it was a miracle that the boys in blue were even still in the game after the Wildcats blew out the first quarter with a 5 goals to 1 effort. There was not much to like in the Blues efforts in the 1st quarter as the Blues midfield seemingly mis-fired - while Wildcats capitalised on an error-ridden Blues outfit.
Compared to the Blues first game against the Wildcats back in round 3 where the Blues were able to start and maintain intensity against the Wildcats before coming to a stuttering stand still in the second half - the Blues of round 10 began the game in a near comatose state. Perhaps it was the 5pm start for the Blues tardy start - no matter there was no excuses to be had as the Wildcats midfield and forward line ran rampant - to control much of the play and the scoreboard showed - as the Wildcats piled on five to the Blues sole goal from Daniel "Junior" Anderson. The siren blowing and providing the Blues a much needed time out. As the rain fall began to grow a little heavier - the Blues squad came out of the 1st quarter break a different side. Blues skipper Jacob Sone continued to battle hard in the ruck despite coming up against the Hamilton Wildcats answer to the Fremantle Dockers Aaron Sandilands - giant Paul Lawson. However Sone's ability to get to more contests around the ground and his constant willingness to win the ball when on the ground was a tribute to him and the club he proudly leads. However it was not Sone who was the star of the show in the second quarter. Some might think it was Mark "Knackers" Dobson who finished the game with 5 goals, three of them in this second quarter. But for this writer - it was Kenny "The Gambler" Wong. Looking back one day - this may be the match which will be remembered as the day the Blues uncovered an OAFL star. The Gambler had played 5 games for the Blues and has shown plenty of promise. He has always had plenty of potential - obviously he has the skills and plenty of ability. But in his first few games - he was lacking that certain fire. The fire to compete and attack his opposition. But Wong - one of the few Blues who stood up in the first quarter began to find some confidence as the game progressed. And before the opposition knew it, the Gambler was on fire. It was through his sheer determination that set up the 3 goals in the second quarter which saw the Blues make a run at the Wildcats. The intensity he attacked the contested ball and his opponents was second to none. The Wildcats midfield had no answer for the little maestro - and began resorting to high tackles and late hits in their illegal attempts to stem the Gamblers output. This drop in discipline from the Cats resulted in 4 free kicks all paid down the ground. Three of these resulted in goals - all at the hands or perhaps the boot of the one and only Knackers. With the Blues midfield back on top - the Blues defense began to settle and began hitting their stride as well. Bruce Parker played a magnificent game running out from the back pocket - while round 9 BOG Steve "Scuba" Clark worked out his opponent. Despite the Blues dominance in this 2nd quarter - they were let down with some serious jitters in front of goal - as they kicked a staggering 6 behinds! The Wildcats holding onto a 43-32 lead as the half time siren blew. Disappointingly for the Blues - the dynamic Kyle "KP" Pinto was to be ruled out for the remainder of the game after suffering a knock early in the game..jpg) Blues Skipper Jacob Sone battles in the ruck The 3rd quarter continued to see the Blues control the majority of the play - Ivan "Milat" Ouellette kicking a gaol early in the third term after winning the ball in the goal square in some serious traffic. The Hamilton Wildcats continued to give away free kicks as they were seemingly more interested in dishing out late hits rather than winning the ball. Knackers Dobson in a nonchalant performance continued to torment his Wildcat opponents kicking his fourth for the day. While on the other end of the field - the Blues defense were tremendous in keeping the Wildcats to only 4 behinds for the quarter. Ewan Williams and Jason "Chief" Caissie were brilliant in their off the ball plays in providing countless shepherds and providing plenty of voice out back. Once again the Blues were unable to truly punish the Wildcats in the slick conditions - kicking another 3 behinds for the quarter. This inability to execute in front of goals in the end will be one of the many reasons which saw the Blues lose this match. The Wildcats holding onto a slender 47-45 lead heading into the final break. The final quarter had the crowd licking their lips for some serious fireworks. Knackers Dobson was quick to answer the call slamming home his 5th major for the day to cap his first BOG winning performance for the season. Fittingly Blues Top Contributor for the day - Kenny Wong kicked the next goal to put the Blues in front for the first time in the game. The Wildcats were quick to respond with one of their own to get the margin back to within a kick - thanks to a free kick paid for an out of bounds play deep in the Blues defense. With the constant rain fall - and the game at boiling point in terms of pressure while player fatigue set in - the final quarter was a scrappy affair. Another free kick paid in the Blues defense saw the Wildcats regain the lead and with time ticking down were able to hold on for a much deserved win. Simply put the Wildcats started the game better and finished the game better. Sure the Blues put in a marvellous second and third quarter - but against quality opposition such as what the Wildcats have shown themselves to be - it has got to be a full four quarter effort to bring the chocolates home. To state the obvious - the Blues have not put in a four quarter effort in their last few games. And this coming weekend against the Eagles - the time has come for the Blues to truly stand up and do the work required if they are to avoid losing their third straight game.
