The Season Begins

It almost seems like the Football goods are smiling on Southern Ontario today as the sun is shining and the weather is absolutely perfect for the first day of matches in the OAFL.  Today the Blues face their Grand Final opponent and downtown rival, The Toronto Dingos in Guelph in what's sure to be an excellent day of Footy.

Today marks new beginnings for the Blues as for the first time in their short history they walk in defending champions, but it isn't exactly the same squad as what was fielded at the end of the 2010 season.  Twelve faces from the Grand Final photo will not be joining the Blues this year, including their Coach.  With the 11 Members leaving due to moving from the city or jetting overseas it does leave the Blues as a different look team. Most of the faces filling those shoes are familiar faces, jumping up from the strong Div 2 squad the Blues filled in 2011.  The biggest call ups being that of Derek "George" MacDonald, and Jason "Chief" Cassie, two players that seem to be at improved form and looking ready to make a splash in the Ones.  With Dan Lock stepping up as head coach the Blues are  looking to take a different approach to this season, but plan to remain competitive in the ever-growing competition the OAFL continues to

In 2011 the Blues squad  is looking to dress a strong Canadian squad as most of their top Canucks remain with the club.  A club record 8 players will be playing on the Northwind squad this year, as well as 4 players a slotted to play with the Wolfpack under 18 team. Although Victor "Ocho" Cinco, and Arnold "Gov" Quirong are both playing in Australia and will not make appearances with the Blues this year.  But this does show excellent growth for the Canadian depth the Blues have worked on over the years.

This season proves to be a year full of hard work for the Blues, but as always the blues are ready for it, and looking forward to another great season!

Good luck to the boys today!
